There is no need to pay a fee to obtain your credit report. Order a free credit report annually from each of the major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Congress mandated the program, which is available nationally, as part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. You can obtain your free reports by mail at:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
or online at

You will have the option to request reports from all three credit bureaus at one time or spread them out over 12 months. To get your free copy of your credit report, you will need to provide your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and current and previous address if you've moved within the last two years.

The three credit bureaus insure that your personal information is safe, but warn the consumer to be aware of giving your information to third parties that promise to get free reports on your behalf.
